Sierra Leone currently has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate all because of the unavailability of clean and affordable water and sanitation facilities.
Sanitation enhances dignity, privacy and safety, especially for women and girls. It improves convenience and social status. Sanitation in schools enables children, especially girls reaching puberty, to remain in the educational system. Restricted toilet opportunities increase the chance of chronic constipation and are making women vulnerable to violence if they are forced to defecate during nightfall and in secluded areas. Providing improved sanitation facilities is a liberating development for women and girls and is providing substantial benefits for the whole community.

In the education sector some improvements have been reported, with recent figures from the Ministry of Education showing an increase in the number of children in primary schools rising to 1.28 million. However, despite this impressive progress, Sierra Leone is far from reaching the target of all primary aged children completing a full course of primary schooling by 2015.

The organisation anticipates receiving grants and donations from private sector sources, banks, foundations and private donors. The project's funding is demand-driven to meet the long-term requirements of its country programmes. Crystal Clear - Klin Wata Foundation’s project ability to implement this strategy is critically dependent upon securing sufficient funding to help achieve its goals
